The sixth cohort reflected on the ever-jargoned definition of ‘sustainability’ in the contemporary built environment.

On 1 Oct 2024, the sixth cohort of N.A.W. hosted ‘sediments’, an intimate dinner accompanied by readings, discussions and film screenings at the Art House in Bethnal Green. Organised in partnership with non-profit philanthropic climate action group re:arc institute, the cohort reflected on the ever-jargoned definition of ‘sustainability’ in the contemporary built environment.

The two halves of the evening were bookended by engaging interviews charting global debates from regenerative landscapes to urban climate resilience.

Salimat Yéwándé Bakare in conversation with Material Cultures‘ George Massoud dared the audience to imagine a post-carbon future: one where architects are ecologically responsible and biomaterials have become the mainstream.

Closing out the evening, Laxmi Andrews spoke with Groundlab‘s Elena Luciano Suastegui & José Alfredo Ramirez about about how they’re designing for, not against, nature to address a deepening water crisis in Mexico City.

The evening’s shared meal was prepared by Fat Macy’s, a social enterprise that supports people to move on from temporary accommodation through culinary and hospitality training.
